Beyond Moving Fast: Leadership When Technology Gets Serious

Technology leadership becomes particularly demanding when familiar assumptions stop providing reliable guidance. Established metrics may capture technical progress without revealing whether value is being created. Proven approaches to innovation may struggle with technologies that require years of learning, substantial investment, and coordination across entire ecosystems. And the pressure to modernize can collide with responsibilities for stability, accountability, and trust. In these situations, leaders need to reconsider how progress is defined, how uncertainty is governed, and how technological ambition translates into outcomes that matter.

The BRIEFS in this issue approach this leadership challenge from very different settings. Benjamin Cabanes, in “Deep Tech as a Strategic Innovation Regime: Leadership Implications for Engineering and Technology Management,” considers what changes when innovation involves long time horizons, substantial uncertainty, and complex ecosystems, placing orchestration and sustained learning at the center of leadership. Raj Karan Reddy Gunukula challenges a different convention in “From Agile to Adaptive: The Metrics Trap – Why Model Accuracy Is a Leadership Anti-Pattern,” questioning whether technical performance metrics tell leaders enough about the value their AI investments create. Madhusudan Bangalore Nagaraja turns to the public sector in “Accountable AI: Leading Public Sector Modernization Without Disruption,” where technological change must be reconciled with system stability, transparency, and public accountability.

The technologies may be new, but the leadership question is timeless: What deserves to move fast, what requires patience, and what must never be compromised?

Benjamin Cabanes – Deep Tech as a Strategic Innovation Regime: Leadership Implications for Engineering and Technology Management

Deep tech changes the rules of innovation. Benjamin Cabanes explains why long development cycles, high uncertainty, capital intensity, and ecosystem dependence demand a different leadership approach. The Leadership BRIEF shows how leaders can sustain learning over time, coordinate diverse actors, and turn ambitious technological missions into scalable outcomes.

Raj karan Reddy Gunukula – From Agile to Adaptive: The Metrics Trap – Why Model Accuracy Is a Leadership Anti-Pattern

The dashboard says the AI model is getting better. But is anything actually improving for the business? This Leadership BRIEF challenges leaders to look beyond accuracy, precision, and other technical measures when judging AI success. Raj Karan Reddy Gunukula proposes combining technical, outcome, and learning metrics to reveal whether AI is creating meaningful change and to guide what happens next.

Madhusudan Bangalore Nagaraja  – Accountable AI: Leading Public Sector Modernization Without Disruption

How do you modernize systems that cannot afford to fail? In his Leadership BRIEF Madhusudan Bangalore Nagaraja examines the challenge of introducing AI into public services where accountability, auditability, and citizen trust are critical. He shows how decision transparency, bounded experimentation, and hybrid delivery models can help leaders innovate while keeping essential systems stable, explainable, and defensible.

Alexander Brem – Editor’s Picks Engineering Management Review (EMR)
