The 4th Industrial Revolution
Life and Enterprise of the Future
(This signature IEEE TEMS Industry Forum will run on the second day of the IEEE TEMSCON 2019 conference in Atlanta, Georgia in June 2019)
Over 200 years ago, water and steam power were harnessed and mechanized production was introduced to the world, thus spawning the 1st Industrial Revolution.
A century later, the 2nd Industrial Revolution began as we harnessed the power of electricity to create mass production.
The 3rd Industrial Revolution came about during the 20th century when we used electronics and IT systems to further automate production.
Now, in the year 2019, we find ourselves in a unique position on the cusp of the 4th Industrial Revolution. This revolution will be characterized by a fusion of technologies that blur the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres. According to experts, these technologies will affect not only industry but also corporate and government policy.
“We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before. We do not yet know just how it will unfold, but one thing is clear: the response to it must be integrated and comprehensive, involving all stakeholders of the global polity, from the public and private sectors to academia and civil society.”
– Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum
“Engaging in more sustainable solutions is a necessity — not just a corporate responsibility — if businesses want to continue operating in the future. Businesses will like the view that ‘once I pay my taxes I’m done with my duty.’ That simply does not work anymore in our age. Private companies are not just “spectators” but a “central player” for paving the way for more sustainable development — with three quarters of the economy in most countries driven by the private sector”.
– Achim Steiner, UN Development Program Administrator
