Editor’s Picks – Engineering Management Review (EMR)

By Alexander Brem

Welcome to another selection of “EMR Editor’s Picks”. EMR aims to provide you with practice-oriented, evidence-based insights from our journal of practice, EMR. Enjoy your full access to all articles mentioned here through your TEMS IEEE Xplore access.

Most people might know the common term of “being stoic”. In this context, the latest EMR issue open-access editorial might interest you. The topic was “What Managers Can Learn From the Stoics”. Here, I introduce the idea of stoa to management. Based on my own experience, I am convinced that their principles are timeless. For instance: once you have done everything possible to address a problem, forget about it. Now, it is out of your hands; wait for the result. And use your time for other things.

Our recent issue includes again various papers. A special mention is the article “Robot Adoption and Profitability: The Opportunities and Challenges Ahead” by Yifeng Chen, Chander Velu and Duncan McFarlane. Since more and more companies are investing in automation, especially in the area of robotics, this is a key issue the author team addresses here, along with their linkages to profitability. Let me highlight the other recently published issue with our IEEE EMR Best Paper Award. The editorial by Abiodun Egbetokun, Santosh Nandi, and Tariq Samad explains how and why the article by Francesco Arcidiacono, Alessandro Ancarani, Carmela Di Mauro and Florian Schupp was chosen. Give it a read, especially if you are curious about the drivers of I4.0 adoption (https://ieeexplore.iee.org/document/10844031).

Just to let you know, we are always interested in practitioner best practices and lessons learned articles on specific topics. In case you are interested in this so called Technology Manager Notebook articles (500 – 2.000 words), this editorial is a recommended read.

Last but not least, please consider participating at our first edition of our TEMSCON Global Series in San Diego in August this year: https://2025.ieee-temscon-global.org/
