Dear TEMS Members
I am humbled, honoured and privileged to assume the role of President of the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS). As I start my two-year tenure, I would like to welcome our current members and invite prospects to join in on this exciting journey. There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in technology and digital innovation as today. With the advancement in AI, Blockchain, IoT and cyber security, it has never been easier to quickly and effectively deploy digital value across all sectors around the globe.
I am deeply grateful to my predecessor, Michael Condry, for his vision, leadership and outstanding achievements during his presidency, and members of the Board. In 2019, the leadership team of TEMS approved the renaming of the Administration Committee (AdCom) to Board of Governors in order to better reflect the role of the elected members.
Welcome to our newly elected Board of Governors: Marina Dabic, Gustavo Giannattasio, William Marshall, Tariq Samad and Mark Wehde. Also, a warm welcome goes out to Neil Sahota (President-elect), Guy Gaynor (VP, Publications) and Liang Downey (VP, Conference).
I give many thanks to Andrea Belz, Luke Maki , Mark Werwath, Oliver Yu, Iris Quan and Rabiz Foda whose terms on the board ended in 2019. I would also like to give a special thanks to Robert Bierwolf for serving for two terms as the VP, Conference.
‘Most people fail in life not because they aim too high and miss, but because they aim too low and hit.’ …Les Brown
In 2019, I worked with each of the VPs to develop aggressive strategic plans for their respective areas to dramatically increase our revenue and grow our membership. Allow me to share some highlights.
Under the leadership of Ravikiran Annaswamy, we started a pilot in India to create a regional team with strong local leaders so we could understand local needs and the context in which to execute local plans. In 6 months, the team has organized and hosted a successful Industry Forum event in Bangalore and more Industry events across India along with a conference are planned in 2020. We are also aggressively recruiting student members by offering a 40% discount for a limited time. Please take advantage of this offer by registering for your student membership by January 31, 2020 which is available globally.
Thanks to Tugrul Daim’s outstanding efforts, IEEE Transaction of Engineering Management (TEM) received more than 1,000 paper submissions in 2019 and is now listed in Australia ABDC as an “A” journal. Thanks to Joe Sarkis’ leadership, our Engineering Management Review (EMR) has become a must read for the practitioners with new and compelling content in every issue. Thanks to Sudeendra Koushik’s continued efforts, our new on-line magazine, LEADER reached out to members and chapters across the globe to discuss and share their activities.
In 2020, under the leadership of Gus Gaynor, we will launch new committees to focus on new publications as well as implementing a strategy for Open Access journals.
Under the leadership of Brendan Galbraith, we are launching cutting edge Technical Activity Committees (TAC) and Special Interest Groups (SIG) that provide knowledge transfer and peer learning opportunities for industrial practitioners and academics. New TAC/SIG include: Development of Global Standards for Distributed AI; Enabling Technology for Environmental & Social Good; and Entrepreneurship in and around Corporations (Intrapreneurship).
In 2020, we also plan to develop educational products that can help enhance the knowledge base and capabilities of current leaders.
Thanks to great vision and many years of hard work by Robert Bierwolf and Michael Condry, our conference portfolio has grown from zero to three flagship conferences and the number of partnership conferences has tripled globally.
Under the leadership of Liang Downey, we proudly present our flagship conferences:
- April 19-22, International Conference on Technology and Entrepreneurship (ICTE 2020) Bologna, Italy
- June 3-7, IEEE Technology Engineering Society International Conference (TEMSCON 2020), Detroit, Michigan, USA
- October 28-30, International Symposium on Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship (ISEI 2020), Bangkok, Thailand
These will all be the must attend events, so mark these dates in your calendar and we hope to see you at one or more of these conferences in the upcoming year.
With the rapid expansion of our conferences, the complexity of managing the finance for these conferences will significantly increase. To ensure our financial due diligence is carried out for these conferences, the board of governors has appointed Bill Marshall as the Conference Treasurer for 2020. Please join me and welcome Bill to the leadership team.
Going forward, my greatest ambition is to escalate our society to the global stage. Both Neil Sahota, President-elect and I have been on the advisory board for the United Nations International Telecommunication Union’s AI for Good Summit (AI4G) since its conception in 2016. AI4G is now a world leading AI conference with 2,500 attendees anticipated to take part in 2020. We now have a team of dedicated volunteers led by Robert Bierwolf and Rich Evans to organize an event to collaborate with AI4G. It is still in the early stages of planning. We happily welcome your input and suggestions.
Our current tagline is “People Enabling Products/Services Success”. I would like to adapt our tagline to better reflect what we strive to achieve. I suggest our new tagline be “Leaders Enabling Products and Services for Good”.
The journey ahead is exciting and I’m looking forward to connecting with you at our conferences, socials, networking events, outreach and workshop offerings. I’d sincerely love to hear from you. Please drop me a line any time at email@example.com.
Wishing you all a great 2020 !
