President’s Letter: 2017 Vision of TEMS
During 2016 TEMS has grown developing a focus that extends its original concepts into areas where the overall IEEE community needs. Our Society tagline is “People Enabling Product/Service Success.” In a nutshell this encompasses the technologies and practices to enable product development, or in simple terms take a technical idea and create a successful product. From the IEEE perspective this focus builds a bridge between technology research and idea generation to product creation. Included are interests in technology management but it goes beyond as central need of the IEEE the bridge between technology and business.
The focus for 2017 and beyond will be addressing the challenges and solutions in this bridge between industry and research.
As a reminder our focus is in six key areas:
- Moving Product/Services from Idea to Market
- Developing from Engineer to Leader
- Organizing your Team and Structure
- Implementing Successful/Exciting Projects and Programs
- Integrating Technology for Capability and Productivity
- Mastering the Challenges of society, Policies, and Standards
The initial path for membership engagement is through Technical Activity Committees (TACs) that opens easier paths for conference and publication membership control. This year, members will be able to establish their own TACs and we have elected an officer to lead the overall TAC program.
Our conferences and publications will focus on these areas as it applies to product and service development. TEMSCON (www.temscon.org) will start this year as our flagship event. We plan on 2 TEMSCON events in 2017 and 3 in 2018. TEMS is also engaging in IEEE initiative programs such as 5G.
We will also be growing our Young Professional and Student opportunities and engagements.
In Summary, we have moved TEMS forward to greatly engage and benefit our membership. We hope you will actively engage in TEMS programs. We look forward to your participation, your ideas, comments and suggestions to make our Society thrive to the benefit of us all.
